メトロポリス・Metropolis

Metropolis is a study into the disconnect between contemporary urban life and the natural environment.

Last year the UN announced 54% of the world’s population now live in urban areas. At the same time, we are reminded daily how our planet cannot sustain our current lifestyles. We continue to leave deep footprints in the natural world.

But change is difficult. We built our manmade world to shelter us from the cause and effects of our lifestyles. The notion of a finite world with finite resources is just a passing thought. Sustainability seems a distant concept when shops are full, rubbish disappears, toilets flush, cars run, and electricity is just a switch away.

With Metropolis, I have used cropped images of roadside trees planted in Tokyo’s urban centres to highlight this imbalance of modern life. The white gap in the frame represents a missing trunk - a physical and metaphorical disconnect between two realities.
